Our Background and History

16 July 1971 was an important date for insurance people in the then South West Africa. On that day, a meeting at the Windhoek Sportklub of 38 representatives of insurance companies, Intermediaries and agencies decided to proceed to establish the Insurance Institute of South West Africa.

The inaugural meeting of the Institute took place on 17 April 1972 and initially 63 individuals joined the Institute. In his opening address, the recently elected President, HK Borchardt, informed the meeting that the Institute was ready to function properly.  It would arrange functions, lectures, education and entertainment for the benefits of its members. The President stressed that an important aim would be to promote education, thereby raising the standard of efficiency, technical and otherwise, of insurance personnel, particularly of the younger generation who should be encouraged to make a deeper study of insurance by enrolling for the examinations.

Following a few years of dormancy, The Insurance Institute of Namibia was revived and became operational on a full-time basis on 01 August 2010.

This initiative is driven from the Namibia Insurance Association (NIA), the Namibia Insurance Intermediaries Association (NIBA) and the Namibia Insurance Claims Adjusters Association (NICAA) in respect of Short Term Insurance initially with the aim to provide and maintain a central organization for the promotion of efficiency, progress, welfare, knowledge, skills development and the general good and development among persons engaged or employed in the insurance industry.

Therefore the objective is to provide a vehicle for members’ personal growth and interaction, serves as a forum for sharing ideas and knowledge, is a point of connection and prime mover for advancing members’ interest within the industry.

In order to fulfil these objectives, The Institute needed to be aware of and understand the current skill level, skills requirements and demand in the Insurance Sector in Namibia.
